The Story of India's EdTech Revolution PW aka Alakh Pandey

Physics Wallah-The Story of India's EdTech Revolution

In India's startup world, where competition is cutthroat and innovation never ceases, there is one tale that really stands out — the tale of Physics Wallah (PW). From a humble start on YouTube to being India's first profitable EdTech unicorn, this story shows us that passion and purpose can be more powerful than funding and fame.

The Beginning

It all began in 2016, when physics teacher Alakh Pandey of Allahabad started posting free video lectures on YouTube. He was not thinking of starting a startup — just providing quality education to all students, not based on the money they have or don't have.

Soon, his style of teaching, wit, and simplicity won over crores of students preparing for competitive exams such as JEE and NEET. The one-man mission soon became a countrywide learning movement.

From Classroom to Company

In 2020, Alakh Pandey joined forces with Prateek Maheshwari to formally open Physics Wallah Pvt. Ltd. The site provided cheap online classes, study resources, and live lectures at rates lower than a fraction of what it took for other EdTech behemoths.

This risky move differentiated PW — while other EdTech startups pursued aggressive expansion and high costs, Physics Wallah emphasized trust, quality, and student achievement.

The Rise of a Unicorn

By 2022, Physics Wallah was India's 101st unicorn startup, worth more than $1 billion. Even more remarkable — it was profitable when several bigger EdTech players were barely holding on.

The company diversified from science streams, initiated offline "PW Pathshala" centers, and entered government exam prep, medical coaching, and test preparation platforms.

Challenges and Resilience

PW's odyssey wasn't smooth. Battling deep-pocketed opponents such as Byju's and Unacademy was no easy feat. But the founders remained committed to their dream — providing education that was affordable, accessible, and genuine.

The founders' honesty and empathy with the learners enabled them to build not only a brand, but a community.

The Takeaway

Physics Wallah's tale is not only one of business success — it is a testament that innovation does not necessarily stem from technology, but from purpose and empathy.

Entrepreneurship is not merely about making money; it's about answering actual problems that affect people's lives.

If OYO disrupted travel, and boAt transformed audio — then Physics Wallah really transformed learning in India.
